Australia's Special Forces: From Sydney Terror Threats to Afghanistan Kill or Capture Missions

About this video

Former Australian commando officer recounts his early operational deployments, including domestic counterterrorism duties, protective security for Prime Minister Julia Gillard, and a five-month Afghanistan deployment in 2012. The guest describes training with U.S. special operations units, operational tempo in Afghanistan conducting leadership interdiction and counter-narcotics missions, and tactical decision-making as a platoon commander partnered with U.S. air assets and Afghan special police.

Key takeaways

• Ritland’s guest describes Australia’s domestic counterterrorism legislation as highly restrictive, requiring government handover before military deployment, illustrated by the 2014 Lindt Cafe siege response limitations
• The guest recounts leading 67 missions over five months in Afghanistan, working with U.S. Task Force aviation assets and maintaining required ratios of Afghan partner forces to Australian operators
• According to the guest, positioning himself in command rather than as the main effort allowed him to develop his team commanders’ skills in a high-risk but resource-rich operational environment
