Black Hawk Down Major Jeff Struecker | Mike Ritland Podcast Episode 120

About this video

Mike Ritland interviews Jeff Struecker, a retired U.S. Army Ranger with 23 years of service including Panama, the Battle of Mogadishu (Black Hawk Down), and numerous Iraq and Afghanistan deployments. Struecker, now a pastor, recounts his path from a transient childhood without a strong father figure to finding mentorship in the Ranger Regiment, shares vivid accounts of his first combat experiences in Panama, and discusses his current work helping veterans and raising awareness about veteran suicide through extreme endurance challenges.

Key takeaways

• Struecker credits a Navy SEAL father’s advice to seek out military roles that test oneself rather than just provide job skills, which led him to the Rangers and shaped his entire career trajectory.
• According to Struecker’s account, being a private in the Ranger Regiment was the hardest job in the military, with approximately 200% annual attrition, and his first firefight in Panama was made manageable only through real-time mentorship from a Grenada veteran beside him.
• Struecker attributes the global epidemic of fatherlessness as devastating to boys’ transition into manhood, defining a man as someone who takes responsibility for his actions, his family, and helps raise up other young men—lessons he learned from Ranger mentors after growing up largely without his father.
