Black Hawk Down: Tom Satterly's HARDEST Op in Somalia

About this video

Ritland’s guest, a former Delta Force operator, recounts his firsthand experience during the Battle of Mogadishu (Black Hawk Down) in October 1993. He describes the escalating intensity of combat missions, the chaotic 18-hour firefight at a helicopter crash site, and the devastating casualties. The guest shares details about being pinned down with minimal ammunition and water, waves of attackers, leadership breakdowns, and the eventual fighting withdrawal that cost 18 American lives.

Key takeaways

• The guest describes how the October 3rd mission in Mogadishu turned into an 18-hour siege when helicopters were shot down, forcing his team to fight with only basic combat loads and no night vision or water
• According to the guest, continuous waves of fighters, many appearing drugged on khat, kept attacking despite heavy casualties, forcing operators to expend all ammunition and scavenge magazines from the ground
• The guest attributes his survival mindset shift to accepting probable death during the battle, which he says removed fear and allowed him to focus purely on fighting, a perspective he reports carries with him to this day
