Boots on the Ground in Iran? This Ends Like Iraq… | Ep. 284

About this video

Mike Ritland interviews Dr. Anthony Vinci, a former senior intelligence official and chief technology officer for the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. Vinci discusses his path from civilian life to becoming a case officer in Iraq, describing the lengthy recruitment process, training at ’the farm,’ and the psychological skills required for intelligence work. He also shares perspectives on current geopolitical tensions with Iran, the rapid pace of political change in America, and the realities of intelligence work versus Hollywood depictions.

Key takeaways

• Vinci explains that becoming a case officer involves learning to build trust and manipulate relationships in unnatural timeframes, primarily through role-playing exercises rather than tactical training
• According to Vinci, the intelligence recruitment process takes approximately two years and involves extensive vetting to ensure candidates are fully committed to a career involving prolonged overseas deployments and family sacrifice
• Vinci attributes his preparation for intelligence work to prior fieldwork experience in conflict zones like South Sudan during graduate school, suggesting that self-selection and prior international experience are important factors in successful case officers
