About this video

Mike Ritland’s guest, a BORTAC (Border Patrol Tactical Unit) agent with thirteen years of service, recounts his career including combat encounters, the death of colleague Brian Terry, and the complexities of border operations. The guest describes BORTAC’s mission—high-risk arrests, reconnaissance, and rescue—as well as the unit’s training, equipment, and operational challenges including understaffing, political constraints, and the moral difficulty of witnessing migrant deaths in the desert.

Key takeaways

• The BORTAC agent describes the unit’s tactical capabilities (weapons, night vision, diving, free-fall parachuting) and its role responding to armed drug smugglers and emergency rescues in remote desert terrain.
• The guest recounts the 2010 death of his classmate Brian Terry during a firefight with armed smugglers, attributing it to the dangerous nature of the job rather than conspiracy, and describes the personal and unit-wide impact of the loss.
• According to the agent, border enforcement faces major challenges including lack of personnel, restrictive policy, fluctuating political support, and the grim reality of migrants dying from exposure—situations BORTAC encounters during operations but which are not their primary mission.
