California Cop with Officer Kyle Shoberg | Mike Drop: Episode 72

About this video

Mike Ritland interviews Kyle Shoberg, a 14-year police officer, K9 handler, and owner of Shoburg Tactical Consulting who teaches a course on surviving deadly encounters. Shoberg recounts his unconventional path into law enforcement—hired at age 20—and shares stories from his career, including a serious car accident and multiple deadly force encounters. The conversation covers his difficult childhood with an abusive, addicted father, his upbringing in rural Northern California, and his views on policing, discretion, and the challenges officers face in balancing enforcement with public support.

Key takeaways

• Shoberg describes being hired as a police officer at age 20 in Northern California and reflects that such young officers may lack the maturity and life experience for the responsibility and discretion the role demands
• He recounts growing up with an abusive alcoholic father who abandoned the family, then being raised by a supportive stepfather from New Zealand who introduced him to sports and stability
• Shoberg and Ritland discuss the importance of officer discretion and agree that enforcing minor infractions (traffic stops, underage alcohol stings) can erode public trust and divert resources from serious crimes
