Cartels, COPS, and Crips: Undercover Narcotics Officer Tegan Broadwater | Mike Drop Episode 224

About this video

Tegan Broadwater, a former 13-year undercover narcotics officer with the Fort Worth Police Department, discusses his career trajectory from touring musician to law enforcement. Broadwater recounts his work on operation Fishbowl, which resulted in 50+ Crips members receiving 625 years in prison, and reflects on his training philosophy, daily routines, and the challenges of modern policing. The conversation covers his nomadic childhood, early passion for music, and the incident that ultimately led him to consider a career change from musician to police officer.

Key takeaways

• Broadwater argues that police fitness and training standards have become inadequate over time, with most departments no longer requiring ongoing physical testing beyond minimal annual shooting qualifications
• Broadwater recounts working as a touring musician before having a son, which led him to reconsider his career path, especially after a violent altercation outside a club where he and his brother were surrounded by multiple attackers
• Broadwater describes carrying a small 5-shot .380 pistol as his primary EDC weapon because its size gives him ‘almost no excuse not to carry it,’ unlike larger firearms he would often leave behind
