Chad Robichaux's Interpreter Aziz | Mike Ritland Podcast Episode 122

About this video

Mike Ritland hosts former Navy SEAL Chad Robichaud and his Afghan interpreter Aziz, who worked with Special Operations from 2002-2016. Aziz recounts his childhood in war-torn Afghanistan, his self-taught English education, and early persecution by the Taliban. The episode focuses on Aziz’s harrowing final days in Kabul during the 2021 collapse, the threat from a former teammate who defected to the Haqqani network, and Chad’s efforts through Mighty Oaks to evacuate Aziz and his family to the United States.

Key takeaways

• Aziz describes growing up amid Soviet occupation, civil war, landmines, and regime changes in Afghanistan, teaching himself English at age 8 and eventually training 800 students before fleeing Taliban persecution in 1999
• Robichaud recounts how Aziz served as his interpreter and cultural advisor across eight deployments, conducting advanced operations and clandestine logistics including purchasing hundreds of AK-47s and other weapons from local sources to stockpile safe houses
• A former Afghan counterpart named Basher defected to the Haqqani network and actively hunted Aziz during the 2021 Taliban takeover, prompting Robichaud and Mighty Oaks to orchestrate Aziz’s evacuation after years of bureaucratic delays in the SIV interpreter visa process
• Aziz explains Afghanistan’s complex landscape of terror groups including the Haqqani network, Kandahari Taliban factions, Al-Qaeda, and ISI-backed organizations, attributing much of the country’s instability to Pakistani intelligence influence and the porous Durand Line border
