Delta Force Operator on the Moments Before the Panama Invasion

About this video

A former Delta Force operator recounts his experience during the 1989 Panama invasion, describing the lead-up, the low-altitude jump into Tocumen airfield, and the chaotic hours of combat that followed. He shares vivid memories of his first combat experience as a corporal, including a tense encounter with a Panamanian guard armed only with a revolver and the moral dilemma he faced in that moment. The operator also discusses how actual combat differed from training, noting that troops sometimes needed to be deliberately loud to draw out PDF forces rather than maintaining the silence emphasized in peacetime exercises.

Key takeaways

• The guest describes how he and other soldiers missed obvious signs of the impending Panama invasion despite multiple jungle training trips and a full regiment rehearsal at Eglin Air Force Base
• The operator recounts a moral decision during combat when he chose not to kill a surrendering Panamanian guard who had been shooting at his squad with a revolver, distinguishing between combatants and non-combatants
• The guest explains that actual combat operations often required tactics opposite to training—being deliberately loud to draw out enemy forces rather than maintaining strict patrol discipline—because getting the enemy to stand and fight was the hardest part
