Delta Force OTC: What They Don't Tell You About Selection

About this video

Ritland’s guest, an unnamed Delta Force operator, recounts his journey from Special Forces through Delta selection, Operator Training Course, and combat deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq. The operator describes OTC as an intense whirlwind, discusses the Battle of Tora Bora in December 2001, and details his later work in Iraq conducting solo missions—often picking up intelligence sources while blending in with the local population. He attributes his closest calls not to enemy action but to being misidentified by U.S. gate guards when re-entering friendly checkpoints.

Key takeaways

• The guest recalls Delta’s OTC as a fast-paced training pipeline with minimal ceremony, requiring adaptability and relentless self-improvement (he turned around his worst obstacle course performance through extra practice and mentorship).
• At Tora Bora in December 2001, the guest’s small team engaged in sustained combat over ten days with extensive close air support, killing large numbers of enemy fighters in an effort to capture bin Laden.
• In Iraq, the guest conducted numerous solo missions to discreetly pick up intelligence sources, emphasizing that success meant avoiding firefights entirely—his most dangerous moments were actually re-entering U.S. checkpoints and being mistaken for enemy by American guards.
