DEVGRU Operator Eddie Penney | Mike Ritland Podcast Episode 110

About this video

Mike Ritland interviews former US Navy SEAL Eddie Penny about his book ‘Unafraid’ and the personal journey behind it. Penny recounts combat experiences and regrets from his deployments, discusses his transition to fatherhood after suddenly becoming a single parent to his three young children, and describes how writing the book forced him to confront his mistakes and flaws as a parent. The conversation also covers Penny’s recent shift toward martial arts training and the importance of continual growth and humility.

Key takeaways

• Penny teaches that focusing on one step at a time—rather than becoming overwhelmed by the whole picture—is essential for moving forward through difficult challenges, a lesson he applied both in combat and parenting
• According to Penny, the process of writing ‘Unafraid’ was emotionally difficult but cathartic, revealing personal flaws and helping him connect better with his children by forcing reflection on past mistakes
• Ritland and Penny both advocate seeking out new skills and being humbled regularly (such as through martial arts training) to continue learning and growing, especially as adults prone to staying in comfort zones
