DEVGRU or Delta Force? Rob O’Neill Explains Who Gets the Call

About this video

Former Navy SEAL Rob O’Neill discusses with Mike Ritland how mission assignments between DEVGRU (SEAL Team 6) and Delta Force are determined within JSOC. O’Neill recounts that the commander of JSOC typically dictates which unit gets assigned to specific operations, and that SEAL Team 6 maintained a presence in Afghanistan working closely with the CIA, which O’Neill believes positioned them for the bin Laden raid. The conversation also covers O’Neill’s perspective on recent geopolitical events including the Venezuela operation and broader national security topics.

Key takeaways

• O’Neill explains that mission assignments between SEAL Team 6 and Delta Force are typically determined by who commands JSOC and operational factors like geographic specialization (e.g., SEALs for maritime operations, Delta for extended land missions)
• O’Neill recounts that SEAL Team 6 maintained outposts on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border working with the CIA, which he believes led to them being assigned the bin Laden raid when Admiral McRaven commanded JSOC
• O’Neill argues that the recent Venezuela operation was primarily about cutting off China’s oil supply and removing foreign adversary presence in the Western Hemisphere, rather than narcotics interdiction
• O’Neill expresses skepticism about the official narrative surrounding the Charlie Kirk incident, stating he wants explanations for various details he finds inconsistent
