DEVGRU’s Most Dangerous Afghanistan Mission You’ve Never Heard About

About this video

Ritland’s guest recounts a harrowing barricaded shooter operation in Afghanistan’s mountainous Kapisa region during a Dev Group deployment. The mission involved clearing a multi-level compound built into a canyon, where enemy fighters with grenades were barricaded in underground rooms. After grenades and initial assaults failed, two team leaders risked their lives using thermobaric grenades to neutralize the threat; one assaulter was shot but continued fighting. The conversation then shifts to ROE constraints, the tension between mission objectives and risk assessment, and reflections on leadership decisions, wartime purpose, and the spiritual dimension of good versus evil underlying conflict.

Key takeaways

• Ritland’s guest describes how two Dev Group team leaders earned Silver Stars by personally leading a dangerous assault on barricaded shooters rather than risk their full team, and recounts an operator named Chad being shot mid-operation but continuing to fight
• Ritland and his guest discuss the tension between operator frustration at being held back and senior leadership’s responsibility to weigh mission value against risk, with Ritland noting Vice Admiral Howard’s perspective that many missions weren’t worth the lives or investment required
• Both speakers reject viewing their wartime service as wasted, emphasizing operators fought for each other and their commitment, not political outcomes, and that the underlying struggle in any conflict is fundamentally between good and evil rather than partisan politics
