He describes how he struggles to reconcile the existence of a loving God with the terrible things people do to each other and the suffering of innocents. Ritland clarifies he’s not atheist but agnostic, stating he doesn’t know what to believe and has become more skeptical with age. The conversation then shifts to Kyle Thompson’s experience trying a dog bite suit with one of Ritland’s protection dogs.

Key takeaways

• Ritland recounts that he was a staunch Christian growing up but his faith began shifting after years in the Navy, where he observed different cultures that believed just as strongly in different religions
• Ritland argues that he cannot reconcile a loving God with human suffering, particularly innocent children experiencing terrible things, stating that as a father he would intervene to prevent his children from harming each other
• Ritland identifies as agnostic rather than atheist, saying he has enough questions and doubts that he can’t claim to believe, but also doesn’t rule out the possibility of God’s existence
