Episode 48: Nikki Selby - Airborne Angel

About this video

Ritland interviews Nikki Selby, a former Navy Mustang (enlisted then officer) with over 23 years of service, now working as an ER nurse, tactical medical instructor, and flight nurse. Selby recounts her upbringing in a military family that moved from the Philippines to North Dakota, Nebraska, and finally Las Vegas, her brief experimentation with drugs as a teenager, and how her father’s influence shaped her into a resilient, competitive person. The conversation covers her tennis background, family dynamics, fitness routines, and transition from a troubled sophomore year to recovery and eventual military service.

Key takeaways

• Selby attributes her mental toughness and hands-on competence to her father’s approach to teaching her practical skills and military history, shaping her into a strong, independent operator.
• According to Selby, she briefly experimented with methamphetamine and LSD as a teenager in Las Vegas but avoided addiction due to lacking an addictive personality, though the experiences were negative and she discontinued use.
• Selby emphasizes the importance of strategy over power in adult competitive tennis, contrasting it with the raw aggression of junior play, and credits the sport with keeping her disciplined and active into adulthood.
