From Army Ranger to Undercover Counter Narcotics Agent | Ep. 272

About this video

Craig Douglas recounts his journey from a bullied child who found structure through martial arts to serving as an Army Ranger in the 1980s and later working 21 years in law enforcement, including undercover narcotics and SWAT. Douglas describes a turbulent adolescence involving felony charges at 14, meeting his gay father for the first time, and the transformative impact of military school. He shares how these experiences shaped his path into the Army Ranger Regiment, law enforcement, and eventually founding Shiv Works, a self-defense training company that now serves military and law enforcement in 49 states and 11 countries.

Key takeaways

• Douglas attributes his childhood martial arts training, which began at age 6 after being bullied, to giving him foundational skills that consumed 4-5 hours daily, 4 days a week throughout his youth
• Douglas recounts being charged with three felonies (burglary, grand larceny, possession of automatic weapons) at age 14, which his family intervened by sending him to military school, providing the accountability structure he says he needed
• The guest describes serving in the 75th Ranger Regiment starting in 1987, leaving after chronic ankle injuries, then pivoting from CIA aspirations to a law enforcement career that began at a county jail in 1990
• Douglas explains that his undercover work skills were entirely learned through training and repetition, not natural ability, and that he teaches students ‘if you can sell it, you can do it’ based on his narcotics work experience
