From Recon to DEVGRU: What it Takes to Operate at the Tip of the Spear | Ep. 304

About this video

Mike Ritland interviews Mike Cirrilli, a former Recon Marine, SEAL, and MARSOC operator with ten combat deployments. Cirrilli recounts his path from Marine Corps recon through Navy SEAL teams to DEVGRU, including a troop commander exchange at Delta Force. The conversation covers his tactical experiences, leadership philosophy drawn from figures like Reagan and Rumsfeld, and reflections on special operations training and culture across branches.

Key takeaways

• Cirrilli attributes his military discipline to the Marine Corps’ transformational boot camp experience, though he credits his parents for foundational values he didn’t fully appreciate until later.
• According to Cirrilli, all tier-one units (SEALs, Delta, MARSOC, etc.) are highly competent but bring different specialized skill sets; he advocates for a joint SOCOM branch to reduce conventional military bureaucracy.
• Cirrilli emphasizes that effective leadership requires humility to admit mistakes and agility to pivot quickly with incomplete information, citing Reagan’s temperament as a gold standard for composure under pressure.
