Grappling with Frogmen - Training Danes in Combatives with SEAL Team 5's Jeff Gum | Mike Drop #193

About this video

Jeff Gum recounts his experiences teaching combatives courses to Danish Frogmen, including a memorable two-week training trip to Copenhagen. He describes the Danish Frogmen as highly skilled operators, noting their intelligence and physical prowess, though he observed they had less background in wrestling and boxing compared to American SEALs at that time. Gum also discusses his training experiences with high-level fighters, particularly praising UFC fighter Brian Ortega as a “straight ninja” who significantly improved Gum’s skills through intensive training sessions.

Key takeaways

• Gum taught combatives to Danish Frogmen in Copenhagen and describes them as smart, skilled operators with excellent English, though they had less wrestling and MMA background than American SEALs at the time (around 2015)
• For basic combatives courses, Gum focused on teaching essential submissions like the guillotine and rear naked choke, plus defenses, rather than overwhelming students with too many techniques
• Gum identifies Brian Ortega as the most impressive fighter he trained with, crediting him with dramatically improving Gum’s skills through generous week-long training sessions that included boxing, Jiu-Jitsu, and sparring with top-level fighters
