Green Beret Steps on IED - Here's What Happened Next with Ryan Hendrickson | Mike Drop 214

About this video

Ryan Hendrickson, a Green Beret, recounts stepping on a pressure plate IED during a mission in Afghanistan on September 12, 2010. He describes the immediate aftermath, including being blown back, unable to breathe from ammonia and dust, and eventually realizing his leg was severely injured with his tibia and fibula exposed. As his team worked to reach him through secondary IEDs and a complex Taliban ambush, Hendrickson reflects on believing he would die and experiencing what he describes as a spiritual moment that gave him hope for survival.

Key takeaways

• Hendrickson recounts that stepping on the IED caused severe trauma to his leg, with his boot at a 90-degree angle and bones visible, though the pain didn’t register immediately due to shock and his brain’s inability to comprehend the trauma.
• Hendrickson describes how his team couldn’t rush to him because multiple IEDs were present, and a complex Taliban ambush was unfolding simultaneously, requiring aircraft and overwatch positions to engage enemy fighters.
• Hendrickson shares that while lying wounded and believing he was going to die, he reflected on his life with shame and reached out to God, and he describes seeing an eagle circling overhead as a sign he would survive.
