Guns, Drugs, and Hollywood Lies: David Packouz’s Untold "War Dogs" Confessions | Ep. 249

About this video

Mike Ritland interviews David Packouz, the former arms dealer whose story inspired the film War Dogs. Packouz recounts his upbringing in an Orthodox Jewish family, his departure from the faith, his early entrepreneurial ventures, and provides insight into which parts of the War Dogs movie were accurate versus Hollywood embellishments. He also discusses his current business ventures and views on AI, science, and religion.

Key takeaways

• Packouz attributes his entrepreneurial mindset to a childhood lesson from his father, who helped him start a trash collection business at age 6 and taught him early principles of pricing and value.
• According to Packouz, the War Dogs film is approximately 70% accurate to real events—the broad story arc is true, but Hollywood added elements like relationship drama to broaden audience appeal, and his girlfriend at the time actually supported his arms dealing work.
• Packouz describes leaving Orthodox Judaism after studying anthropology in college, finding that scientific evidence conflicted with literal Biblical interpretation, and eventually bringing five of his eight siblings out of the faith as well.
