How to Launch a Nuclear Missile - Kickstarting WW3 with Andrew Bustamante | Mike Drop 206

About this video

Andrew Bustamante, a former CIA officer and Air Force nuclear missile officer, explains the detailed process of launching a nuclear missile to host Mike Ritland. He describes how the President would use the nuclear football to transmit launch codes, how missile crews in underground capsules would verify and execute those codes, and reveals that the crews are merely backup systems with multiple redundancies. Bustamante also discusses his training experience and daily life as a nuclear missile officer, describing it as surprisingly relaxed compared to other Air Force roles.

Key takeaways

• Bustamante explains that the President breaks a plastic card from the nuclear football to extract a launch code, which is transmitted to all nuclear bases, activating only the missiles designated for the specific target in that code.
• Bustamante describes that missile crews in underground capsules never know if they actually launched a missile, as they are geographically separated from the missiles and only input codes and execute procedures.
• Bustamante reveals that nuclear missile crews are redundant backup systems - if one crew is incapacitated, another crew can activate their missiles, and if all ground crews fail, a plane can transmit codes remotely to launch the weapons.
