Hunting a Monster: The FBI’s Frenzied Race to Stop 9/11’s Elusive Hijacker | Ep. 262

About this video

Mike Ritland interviews Harry Samut, a former Naval intelligence officer and retired FBI agent who was part of the joint terrorism task force that arrested Zacharias Moussaoui, an intended 9/11 hijacker. Samut recounts his career path from reluctant intel officer to FBI counterterrorism agent, describing the Moussaoui interrogation, his assignment at Top Gun, and lessons from two decades investigating terrorism cases. He reflects on leadership weaknesses, the challenges of FBI hiring, and what drew him to operational work over analysis.

Key takeaways

• Samut describes interrogating Moussaoui for 17 days in 2004, calling him a ‘monster’ and ’legitimate long-term senior al-Qaeda operative’ who made no admissions leading to serious charges
• According to Samut, he was involuntarily assigned to Naval intelligence despite wanting surface warfare, which planted the seed for his FBI career because he wanted to be an operator making decisions rather than giving advice
• Samut reflects that he wishes he had been better at helping weaker agents and task force officers, recognizing in hindsight that they needed mentorship more than the high-performing go-getters he favored
