I Survived Afghanistan as a SEAL Just to Get Shot in California Over $3k | Ep. 300

About this video

Mike Ritland interviews Derek Yiannis, a Navy SEAL veteran who served 12.5 years in the Navy with 8 as a team guy. Yiannis recounts his unconventional path to the teams—including failing his initial PST, quitting during Hell Week due to undiagnosed pneumonia, and spending time in the fleet before successfully completing BUD/S with Class 284. He discusses his competitive paintball background, deployment experiences in Afghanistan working with Afghan National Army Special Forces, EDC preferences, and his current work as a shooting instructor in California.

Key takeaways

• Yiannis describes his winding path to becoming a SEAL: he failed his first PST, quit Hell Week in Class 272 due to pneumonia (later receiving a non-verbal drop), spent a year in the fleet as an OS in Japan and Korea, then successfully completed training with Class 284
• According to Yiannis, his professional paintball background was both a help and hindrance in CQB training—he understood gunfighting fundamentals and angles but had to unlearn certain habits and learn proper military weapons manipulation
• Yiannis recounts his deployment to Herat and Farrah provinces in Afghanistan (2012-2013) working with Afghan National Army Special Forces (ANASF), describing missions including setting up checkpoints where he suspected some commandos were working both sides
