I Was at Nisour Square: The Blackwater Contractor They Tried to Silence

About this video

A former Blackwater contractor recounts his nearly four-year service in Iraq from 2004-2008, culminating in the infamous Nisour Square incident in 2007. The guest describes the deteriorating security environment, the firefight at Nisour Square that resulted in 17 civilian deaths, and the subsequent FBI investigation and legal proceedings. Despite ongoing legal complications including a gag order that prevents him from discussing details, he eventually threaded the needle to join the Navy SEALs at age 28, where instructors who knew him from Blackwater showed him mutual respect while holding him to high standards.

Key takeaways

• The guest describes his Blackwater experience evolving from a ‘rogue cowboy’ atmosphere in 2004-2006 to an increasingly dangerous environment by 2007, where he felt an ‘ominous presence’ and believed he would likely die there
• The guest recounts being granted compulsory immunity to testify about Nisour Square, but claims his testimony as a team leader inside a closed vehicle was ’not compatible with their truth,’ making him ‘public enemy number one’ to prosecutors according to his lawyer
• The guest entered Navy BUDS at 28 with significant combat experience, and he reports that SEAL instructors who knew him from Blackwater showed mutual respect while maintaining high standards, with one instructor telling him ‘don’t step on my dick, I won’t step on yours’
• The guest states he is under a DOJ gag order that prevents him from discussing details of the Nisour Square incident, though he maintains the firefight was not like ’the movies’ and that participants were ‘Americans trying to do the right thing’
