Is He Taliban? - Trading Livestock for Lives with SEAL Team 7's Mike O'Dowd | Mike Drop Clips #175

About this video

Mike O’Dowd, a former SEAL Team 7 member, recounts a mission at an Afghan police compound where their snipers shot two armed men approaching their position. O’Dowd describes how locals brought one wounded man to the compound claiming he was a police officer, but through separate interrogations of witnesses, O’Dowd determined the man was working for both the Taliban and police. After the man died despite attempts to stabilize him, O’Dowd settled the dispute by trading a goat he had purchased earlier that day.

Key takeaways

• O’Dowd recounts that SEAL snipers made impressive long-range shots (approximately one mile) on two armed men approaching their compound position
• O’Dowd describes using interrogation techniques, particularly questioning a child separately from adults, to determine that the wounded man was ‘dual-hatting’ as both Taliban and police officer to collect two paychecks
• O’Dowd reflects on the emotional experience of performing chest compressions on a dying enemy combatant, and notes the stark contrast in how the dispute was resolved by trading a goat for the man’s life
