K9 Handler/Trainer Dan Cliff | Mike Ritland Podcast Episode 112

About this video

Dan Cliff, a retired K9 handler with 29 years at the Morristown Police Department and owner of Integrity K9, discusses his law enforcement career with host Mike Ritland. Cliff recounts experiences from patrol work, including physical confrontations and pursuits, and describes the evolution of drug enforcement from cocaine and marijuana to heroin and methamphetamine. He shares observations about declining recruitment challenges in modern policing, changes in training standards, and the shift in department camaraderie over his three-decade career.

Key takeaways

• Cliff describes law enforcement as requiring confidence that can border on cockiness, comparing it to military service where job demands necessitate a certain level of self-assurance
• According to Cliff, his department has seen a shift from cocaine and marijuana to heroin and methamphetamine as primary drugs, with fentanyl-laced substances causing more overdoses because users misjudge dosage
• Cliff observes that police recruiting has become difficult across departments, with starting pay around $35,000 annually making it hard to attract candidates despite many having bachelor’s or master’s degrees
