Loyalty at the CIA? Former Spy Talks Playing Politics with Andrew Bustamante | Mike Drop 206

About this video

Andrew Bustamante, a former CIA officer, recounts a critical incident from 2014 when he approved an emergency six-figure funding request to support a counterterrorism drone operation while his supervisor was absent. Despite the mission’s success and Bustamante operating within his authority, he was reprimanded by his director for not seeking higher approval, which Bustamante believes was due to internal politics rather than proper protocol. This experience, along with concerns about prioritizing personal loyalty over mission success, contributed to his decision to leave the CIA.

Key takeaways

• Bustamante describes approving an emergency funding request within his authority that led to mission success, but was reprimanded because his director felt his loyalty was misaligned due to internal agency politics
• Bustamante explains that CIA officers sign narrow lifetime secrecy agreements preventing disclosure of personal operational histories without written CIA approval, and he has been trying since 2021 to publish a book about a joint operation with his wife
• Bustamante distinguishes between ethics (rules defined by external groups) and morals (personal codes), noting this distinction is important to how the CIA operates and recruits
