MACV-SOG vs SEAL Team 6 — Which Unit Was More Dangerous?

About this video

A former MACV-SOG officer recounts his service with the secretive Vietnam-era unit, explaining that SOG was a joint unconventional warfare task force and precursor to JSOC. He describes SOG’s structure across five operations (maritime, aerial, intelligence, agents, and ground reconnaissance), noting the unit had roughly 500 personnel and achieved an estimated 27 Congressional Medals of Honor. The guest shares personal experiences as a launch officer, briefer for special operations, and discusses SOG’s casualty rates (217 KIA, 80 MIA), intelligence intercepts that confirmed fates of missing soldiers, and his subsequent career path to West Point.

Key takeaways

• The guest explains that MACV-SOG was a joint unconventional warfare task force that served as the precursor to JSOC, with lineage from OSS Jedburgh teams, and never exceeded about 500 personnel while earning an estimated 27 Congressional Medals of Honor.
• The guest recounts that SOG maintained an economy of force, with teams operating at roughly 800-to-1 odds and estimates suggesting three additional North Vietnamese divisions would have fought in South Vietnam without SOG operations in Laos and Cambodia.
• The guest describes how SOG learned the fates of MIA personnel through intercepted Vietnamese communications on tactical and administrative networks, revealing that no SOG soldiers were captured and held at the Hanoi Hilton—all 80 MIAs were killed in action.
• The guest shares his role as command briefer for all special operations in Southeast Asia, presenting classified after-action reports weekly to the ambassador, CIA station chief, and top military commanders including General Abrams.
