Mike Drop Podcast Episode 41: Jaeson Jones - Cartels, Drugs, and Walls

About this video

Mike Ritland interviews Jason Jones, a retired captain from the Texas Department of Public Safety with 24 years in law enforcement. Jones recounts his career progression from corrections officer to sheriff’s deputy to DPS, including work in narcotics, intelligence, counterterrorism, and managing the Texas Rangers border security operations center. He discusses his early experiences in law enforcement during the 1990s, the evolution of drug trafficking, SWAT work, and the changing nature of border security challenges in Texas.

Key takeaways

• Jones attributes his law enforcement career path to his stepfather’s inspiration as an HPD officer and emphasizes that starting in corrections provides invaluable experience in reading body language and criminal behavior
• According to Jones, the narcotics landscape in Texas during the mid-1990s was dramatically different from today, primarily involving local college dealers and domestic methamphetamine production rather than cartel-dominated trafficking
• Jones describes the rigorous 27-week DPS Academy as one of the most physically and mentally challenging experiences of his career, noting that physical fitness standards significantly improved after pay raises in 2004
