Mike Drop Podcast Episode 50: Clint Emerson and Shane Hiatt

About this video

Mike Ritland hosts Navy SEAL veteran friends Shane Hyatt and Clint Emerson for the first episode in his new studio. The three share stories from their friendship spanning decades, trading embarrassing anecdotes and crude humor. Hyatt recounts his unconventional upbringing in New Mexico—raised in poverty by an abusive stepfather on a small farm, learning hands-on skills, and eventually joining the Navy after a neighbor’s reverse-psychology pitch about the SEALs. Emerson previously appeared as Ritland’s first podcast guest.

Key takeaways

• Hyatt describes growing up in New Mexico with minimal resources, where his family grew or raised 85-90% of their food on a half-acre plot, teaching him self-reliance and practical skills from childhood
• According to Hyatt, his abusive stepfather (who had previously been his paternal grandfather by marriage) was physically violent but skilled at building and repairing things, instilling a hands-on work ethic despite the mistreatment
• Hyatt recounts joining the Navy after a neighbor and Vietnam-era pilot used reverse psychology, suggesting the SEALs were ‘out of their minds’—which immediately attracted Hyatt’s interest
