Navy SEAL Filmmaker Remi Adeleke | Mike Ritland Podcast Episode 147

About this video

Remi Adeleke, Navy SEAL turned filmmaker, discusses his transition into screenwriting and directing since his last podcast appearance. He describes teaching himself filmmaking through masterclass courses and YouTube while working on major productions, and explains how he’s now directing his first feature film about organ harvesting. Adeleke also discusses the challenges of breaking into Hollywood, the ongoing WGA strike over AI-generated scripts, and how the film industry’s structure resembles a SEAL platoon’s organization.

Key takeaways

• Adeleke taught himself screenwriting and directing through Masterclass, YouTube channels, and on-set experience on films like The Plane and Ambulance, rather than formal film school
• Adeleke argues the Hollywood industry operates like a SEAL platoon, with directors as chiefs coordinating different departments (costume, production design, etc.) to execute a unified vision
• According to Adeleke, the WGA writers’ strike centers on studios wanting to use AI to generate scripts and have non-union employees polish them, which would eliminate union writers’ jobs and income from rewrites
