Navy SEAL: Kicked Out of the Naval Academy — Then Earned His Way Into the SEAL Teams | Ep. 307

About this video

Ritland interviews Johnny Wilson, a former Navy SEAL (Teams 4 and 10) and founder of Envy Mind Health. Wilson recounts his unconventional path to the SEAL Teams, including getting kicked out of the Naval Academy for possessing a fake ID while intoxicated, taking a mandatory year off, and ultimately enlisting to earn his way into BUDS. He discusses his upbringing as a military brat, his relationship with his strict Army MP father, parallels in his own parenting struggles after becoming a SEAL, and the importance of learning from failure and daring greatly despite setbacks.

Key takeaways

• Wilson attributes his journey to the concept of ‘daring greatly’—taking risks and trying even when failure is likely, rather than sitting on the sidelines as a critic.
• Wilson recounts being dismissed from the Naval Academy after showing both his real ID and a homemade fake ID to a Marine guard while intoxicated, then rebuilding through community college, fitness, and sobriety before enlisting.
• Wilson describes generational patterns of stern military parenting—his father’s strict MP background bleeding into home life, and Wilson repeating similar short, direct communication with his own children after returning from SEAL deployments.
