Operation Red Wings: What It Was Really Like on the Ground

About this video

Ritland’s guest, a former Army Ranger medic, recounts experiences from multiple deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. He describes participating in the Red Wings recovery mission shortly after arrival, walking rugged mountain terrain at high altitude. The deployment included diverse missions from medical outreach to hostage recovery. His Iraq deployment in 2006 involved intensive direct action raids against foreign fighters and IED makers, including detailed accounts of close-quarters combat and the moral complexities of treating enemy wounded.

Key takeaways

• The guest participated in the Red Wings recovery operation, recovering Matt Axelson’s body and learning Marcus Luttrell survived, which he describes as feeling like a meaningful win after heavy losses
• Combat medics face ethical tensions when treating enemy combatants; the guest recounts moments when exhaustion and anger influenced his decisions about who received care and pain management
• Intensive combat rotations (100+ direct action raids in three months) can create emotional detachment and an ‘us versus them’ mentality that the guest acknowledges he has worked to process through meditation and reflection since leaving service
