RASP vs RIP: What It Takes To Become an Army Ranger

About this video

Ritland’s guest recounts his journey through military selection processes, including an injury that forced him to recycle from RASP, his determination to prove himself during SFAS, and his combat deployments to Afghanistan with 10th Special Forces Group. He describes how the lack of a father figure drove his need for validation from elite warriors, and details specific firefights including an ambush where his interpreter was shot. The guest attributes his persistence to rejecting the identity others expected of him and needing to prove his worth to himself.

Key takeaways

• The guest’s drive to succeed in selection stemmed from needing validation from hard men he respected, rooted in growing up without a father and refusing to accept the limitations others placed on him
• After an ankle injury forced him to recycle from RASP, the guest became hyper-vigilant about injury prevention during SFAS, treating every preventable mistake as a personal failure
• During deployment to Afghanistan in 2016, the guest’s team experienced unexpectedly high operational tempo, engaging in multi-day valley clearance operations against ISIS with daily firefights and at least one serious ambush
