Rob O'Neill Breaks His Silence on the Toxic Culture at DEVGRU

About this video

Ritland recounts his experience screening for and serving with SEAL Team 6, describing the selection process, cultural differences from conventional SEAL teams, and combat deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq between 2004-2007. He shares his involvement in the aftermath of Operation Red Wings in 2005, detailing the multi-day search for Marcus Luttrell, and discusses the evolution of close-quarters battle tactics his unit developed during high-tempo operations in Iraq.

Key takeaways

• Ritland describes SEAL Team 6 selection (Green Team) as emphasizing professionalism, the ability to recover from mistakes, and being the ‘gray man’ rather than standing out, with close-quarters battle training serving as the primary attrition point
• According to Ritland, his unit participated in the search for Marcus Luttrell after Operation Red Wings, hiking for days in extreme conditions alongside Rangers and other coalition forces before Luttrell was located by another element
• Ritland recounts his unit shifting from high-speed room clearing to slower ‘combat clearance’ tactics during Iraq deployments, a change he credits with saving lives during nightly operations targeting Al-Qaeda networks in 2007
