SEAL Human Intel Operations: What Actually Happened to the Guys We Captured

About this video

A former Navy SEAL recounts his first deployment to Iraq in 2011, where as a new guy he ran human intelligence operations, managing local Iraqi assets to gather information on targets. He describes the process of collecting intelligence from indigenous personnel and coordinating with the CIA to identify and capture targets, then presenting intel packages to his platoon for nighttime raids. The guest expresses frustration that most captured individuals were released shortly after, questioning the purpose of the missions and reflecting on the disconnect between operations and strategic goals.

Key takeaways

• The guest ran human intelligence operations in Iraq as a new SEAL, managing local Iraqi informants who unknowingly or knowingly gathered information, then coordinating nighttime raids based on that intelligence.
• The guest recounts that nearly all captured targets were released within days by higher command with no explanation, which he found demoralizing and made him question the mission’s purpose.
• The guest describes most raids as encountering little resistance, with targets caught off-guard in their homes, and notes one instance where a military working dog detected a weapons cache the team had missed.
