SEAL Team Ten Canine Handler Chris Cappa Part One

About this video

Mike Ritland interviews Chris Kappka, a former US Navy SEAL who served eight years on SEAL Team 10, including deployments to West Africa and Iraq’s Al Anbar Province. Kappka recounts his difficult childhood marked by instability and absence of positive male role models, his journey through football and college struggles with the law, and how he eventually found direction. He discusses his time as handler for K9 Miki (who received a Navy Accommodation Medal for valor), his progression to Leading Petty Officer and Senior Enlisted Advisor at the East Coast Kennel, and his path from aimlessness to military service.

Key takeaways

• Kappka attributes his troubled upbringing—including an absent biological father and unstable home life—as teaching him what not to do as a parent, breaking generational cycles through conscious choice
• A high school football coach (Joel Hughes) became Kappka’s adoptive father, providing the stable male role model and structure that redirected his path from legal troubles toward opportunity
• Before enlisting at age 25, Kappka was working various jobs (mattress sales, bartending, liquor sales) while breeding pitbulls and training in Muay Thai, searching for direction and a productive outlet for aggression
