About this video

A former DEVGRU operator recounts his 2007 Iraq deployment and the 2009 Captain Phillips rescue mission, where SEAL Team Six proved it could deploy anywhere in the world within 24 hours. The guest describes the logistical challenges of the rapid deployment to Somalia, including jumping into the ocean and working with limited intelligence on an unprecedented hostage scenario. He emphasizes how the mission validated claims the unit had made since 1980 about global rapid response capabilities, crediting preparation and training for the successful outcome.

Key takeaways

• The guest describes how SEAL Team Six successfully executed a global rapid deployment in under 24 hours during the 2009 Captain Phillips rescue, validating a capability the unit had claimed since 1980 but never operationally demonstrated
• The guest recounts that snipers deployed to the Indian Ocean were in their own beds in Virginia Beach just four days prior, emphasizing how constant preparation and maintaining properly sighted weapons enabled success on extremely difficult shots
• The guest explains that the Phillips rescue presented an unprecedented tactical challenge because, despite decades of planning for various maritime scenarios, no one had anticipated rescuing a hostage from an orange lifeboat being towed by a destroyer
