The Most Secret Tier 1 Unit in the World? Joe England Breaks Down ISA (TF Orange) | Ep. 287

About this video

Ritland interviews Joe England, a former Tier One operator (Task Force Orange/ISA) and Blackhawk pilot. England recounts his journey from a soccer scholarship and near-fatal car accident that caused brain injury, through joining the Army as a Persian Farsi linguist, deploying with 5th Special Forces Group, and eventually pursuing work in signals intelligence. The conversation also covers philosophy (stoicism, Nietzsche, Machiavelli), England’s childhood in Germany, and reflections on faith, politics, and personal growth.

Key takeaways

• England credits stoicism—particularly the principle of controlling one’s interpretation of events rather than the events themselves—with helping him reframe adversity and find purpose after his traumatic brain injury
• England’s guest recounts suffering a traumatic brain injury in a drunk-driving collision at age 20, regressing to elementary-level cognition, and being medically disqualified from Special Forces due to spleen removal—obstacles he worked around by becoming a linguist
• England emphasizes that early exposure to death (mother at 15, all grandparents by 18) and developing dark humor helped him cope with loss and prepared him for challenges later in military service
