The Real Reason the US Avoids Direct Action in Mexico

About this video

Ritland discusses the complexities of U.S. operations against drug cartels, contrasting the precision Venezuela operation with the challenges of potential action in Mexico. He explains why Mexico presents a more difficult target due to its proximity, economic interdependence, and splintered cartel landscape that could lead to asymmetrical warfare and civilian casualties. Ritland emphasizes the collective effort behind intelligence operations and reflects on his personal experiences with DEA, including being paralyzed by a drunk driver.

Key takeaways

• According to Ritland, Mexico poses a more complex challenge than Venezuela due to economic interdependence, border proximity, and splintered cartel factions that would make military intervention destabilizing and likely result in asymmetrical warfare
• Ritland describes Mexican cartels as comparable to ISIS in brutality and explains that retaliatory actions against civilians and propaganda campaigns would be major obstacles to U.S. intervention
• Ritland stresses that successful intelligence operations involve dozens of personnel across multiple agencies over decades, not just the operators visible in final missions, and advocates for recognizing those behind-the-scenes contributors
