The Unwritten Rules That Separate DEVGRU From Everyone Else

About this video

Ritland interviews a former DEVGRU operator who recounts his five deployments to Afghanistan and Somalia, describing differences in operational tempo and rules of engagement across rotations. The guest characterizes each DEVGRU squadron’s distinct culture and discusses the dynamics between selected operators and support personnel. Ritland and his guest explore tactical dog deployment in barricaded shooter scenarios and discuss how dogs’ nonverbal communication skills inform both combat operations and civilian situational awareness.

Key takeaways

• The guest describes his five DEVGRU deployments, noting varying operational tempos and increasingly restrictive ROEs on later Afghanistan rotations that required bringing large numbers of partner forces on operations
• According to the guest, each DEVGRU squadron has a distinct personality in how they treat support personnel, ranging from tough-love enforcement of standards to more flexible boundaries, with hierarchies and tensions between selected operators and non-selected support staff
• Ritland teaches that tactical dogs should only be sent into high-probability-of-death scenarios when missions are critical and no other options exist, but notes dogs have advantages in speed, size, and ability to read threat cues that may give them better survival odds than human entry teams
• Both speakers discuss how dogs’ reliance on nonverbal communication makes them exceptionally skilled at identifying threats based on body language and energy, a skill Ritland’s guest applies to business by trusting gut reactions about people rather than dismissing red flags
