Tier One ROK Navy SEAL: Hostage Rescue Operations Gone Wrong

About this video

A former ROK Navy SEAL describes his deployments to Somalia conducting anti-piracy operations, his time with an SDV team doing reconnaissance on North Korea, and his subsequent career including contracting, UN security work, and starting a consulting company. The guest recounts traveling to Ukraine in early 2022 to fight alongside Ukrainian forces, where he served as a team leader for approximately three months before sustaining a knee injury. Upon returning to Korea, he faced criminal charges including attempted murder charges that were dropped, ultimately receiving an 18-month suspended sentence for passport violation and losing his passport until 2027.

Key takeaways

• The guest describes his anti-piracy boarding operations off Somalia in 2009, stating all his missions were completed without firing shots as pirates would discard weapons, though he recounts a separate 2011 ROK SEAL operation that rescued 21 hostages and resulted in 8 pirates killed and 5 captured.
• The guest explains he violated Korean law by traveling to Ukraine in early 2022 after President Zelenskyy’s public call for foreign volunteers, leading to his arrest upon return and an 18-month suspended prison sentence for passport violation.
• The guest characterizes Russian forces in Ukraine as a “mixed bag” in terms of capability, noting some units appeared uncoordinated while others like Spetsnaz were more effective, and observing that initially neither side fought at night due to lack of night vision equipment.
