Top Gun Fighter Pilot Instructor Jack Stewart Part One

About this video

Mike Ritland interviews Jack Stewart, a former Navy F/A-18 Hornet pilot, Top Gun instructor, and current Southwest Airlines pilot and author. Stewart recounts his path from childhood dreams of Naval Aviation to acceptance at the Naval Academy, describing Academy life, traditions, and the selection process that led to his fighter pilot career. He shares his motivations for service, explains the differences between Navy and Air Force Aviation according to his perspective, and discusses the rigorous but artful nature of flying.

Key takeaways

• Stewart attributes his attraction to Naval Aviation to family history (his grandfather flew B-17s in WWII), childhood exposure to flying with his father, and a deep respect for military service shaped by the Vietnam generation.
• According to Stewart, flying is more art than science for him; he emphasizes that strong math skills aren’t strictly necessary for piloting, and that passion and aptitude matter more than perfect grades.
• Stewart describes the Naval Academy’s service selection process as merit-based (class rank determines choice priority) and community-vetted, with roughly half of each Academy class receiving pilot slots and candidates needing approval from their desired community.
