About this video

Austin Hancock, a former Marine Lance Corporal, recounts his 2006-2007 deployment to Iraq with the 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines. Hancock describes serving on a small 20-person VIP security detail protecting his battalion commander as they traveled to various FOBs and combat outposts across Haditha and other regions of Iraq. He details a joint raid operation with Task Force 16 special operations personnel and reflects on the psychological challenges Marines face when they don’t experience direct combat despite constant high-alert conditions.

Key takeaways

• Hancock served in a 20-person VIP security section protecting the battalion commander, which gave him the opportunity to see more of Iraq than most Marines who stayed in one deployment area
• Hancock recounts participating in a joint operation with Task Force 16 where his team provided ground transportation and support for special operations personnel conducting a raid
• Hancock reflects on the internal struggle many service members face when they deploy under constant stress and preparation but don’t experience the direct combat they anticipated, noting that some continue seeking that validation after returning home
