Why Are US Weapons Made with Chinese Parts?

About this video

The guest explains how U.S. weapons systems like the F-35 rely on complex supply chains with thousands of subcontractors that ultimately source materials from China, creating security vulnerabilities. He describes his company Forge’s approach of vertical integration and decentralization to build a more secure domestic manufacturing ecosystem. The guest reports that government officials now understand these supply chain concerns and that federal funding is being directed toward improving domestic production capacity.

Key takeaways

• The guest explains that U.S. weapons supply chains involve thousands of subcontractors, with critical materials like nickel often sourced from China, creating security risks
• The guest describes Forge’s strategy of vertical integration (controlling the entire supply chain from raw materials to finished products) and decentralization to create secure, flexible manufacturing
• The guest states that rapid design iteration in modern warfare (platforms redesigned every 3 months in Ukraine) requires manufacturing systems that can switch production quickly, not just achieve scale
• The guest reports that U.S. government officials now recognize these supply chain vulnerabilities and are providing federal funding to improve domestic manufacturing capacity
