Why Prison Should Be HELL for Violent Offenders

About this video

Mike Ritland and his guest, Sheriff Joe Arpaio (who mentions having run jails and having a son who was incarcerated in his own facility), discuss whether prison conditions should be harsher for violent offenders. The guest argues that current prisons function like “clubs” and advocates for stricter conditions for violent criminals, pointing to El Salvador’s Bukele regime as an example. Ritland proposes separating violent and nonviolent offenders, suggesting that violent felons be placed in extremely harsh conditions (no clothes, no bedding, extreme cold) to increase deterrence, arguing that the current system fails to prevent recidivism.

Key takeaways

• The guest argues that violent offenders, especially sex offenders, should face much harsher prison conditions because current environments are too comfortable and fail to deter recidivism.
• Ritland proposes that violent felons be housed separately in extreme conditions (cold, minimal provisions, isolation) for shorter sentences, believing 30 days in such an environment would deter repeat offenses more effectively than longer sentences in current facilities.
• The guest claims that self-imposed racial segregation in Western U.S. prisons actually reduces violence by allowing inmates to police their own groups, though he notes this may not occur in Midwest or East Coast facilities.
• Both speakers acknowledge that activist and rights groups typically sue to prevent harsher prison conditions, which they view as obstacles to implementing more punitive measures.
