Jessica McKellar | Founder @ Pilot

About this video

Jessica Mackellar, founder and CTO of Pilot, shares how her work as a software engineer, company builder, and open-source community organizer converged into a single mission: building inclusive communities and pushing toward systemic justice. She traces her journey from running Boston Python workshops that inadvertently changed lives, to realizing that disparities in tech reflect deeper societal inequalities, to intentionally connecting her work in business with criminal justice reform and education access.

Key takeaways

• Jessica’s realization that her work inside and outside her company are the same—both about building diverse, inclusive communities doing the right thing—reframed how she thinks about her role as a leader and entrepreneur.
• Outreach efforts have compounding effects: Boston Python’s intro workshops quadrupled the user group’s size and signaled community values; those same networks later trained incarcerated people and connected them to opportunities like speaking at PyCon.
• Addressing surface-level problems (e.g., lack of women in a user group) requires tracing root causes back to fundamental societal inequalities in education, access, representation, and stereotypes—turning tactical fixes into activist work.
