The Most Valuable Skill For Any Founder
About this video
George Mack joins Sam and Shaan to explore the concept of high agency—the ability to take action and shape outcomes rather than passively waiting for things to happen. The hosts discuss how agency can be developed, share examples of extreme agency from entrepreneurs and historical figures, and explore how language, environment, and mindset influence one’s capacity for agency in business and life.
Key takeaways
- High agency is the ability to act decisively and shape your circumstances rather than waiting for external help; it can be learned and developed through deliberate practice and surrounding yourself with high-agency people
- Language shapes reality and behavior: changing words like ‘should’ to ‘choose’ or ‘rehab’ to ‘renew’ shifts mindset and actions; memes and new terminology (like ‘vibe coding’) can expand what becomes possible
- Breaking your ‘speed bar’—the assumed rate at which tasks must happen—reveals that speed and timelines are negotiable; Sam’s piano purchase in 24 hours and George’s acquisition of high-agency.com show how mobilizing focus and intention can compress timelines dramatically
- High-agency people often have unusual teenage hobbies or obsessions that show their willingness to defy social pressure; this intrinsic motivation and non-conformity is predictive of future entrepreneurial success
- Humans misremember events significantly; always-on recording technology will fundamentally change memory, identity, and society in ways historians will study—similar to the shift when writing was invented
