Nedra Glover Tawwab on boundaries, family, and finding peace

Nedra Tawwab delivers therapy-level insight in plain language. These videos collect her best conversations — with Oprah, TED, Esther Perel, and others — on saying no, managing difficult family dynamics, and reclaiming your peace without apology.

Section 01

Boundaries and the art of saying no

Start here for the core message: boundaries are not selfish — they're the foundation of healthy relationships and self-respect.

Section 02

Family systems and difficult relationships

Tawwab's second book Drama Free tackles the hardest terrain: family relationships you can't simply walk away from — and how to manage them without losing yourself.

A boundary is not a wall. It's a gate — and you're the gatekeeper.

About Nedra Glover Tawwab

The Woman Who Made Boundaries Mainstream

Nedra Glover Tawwab grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and earned her Master of Social Work from Wayne State University. She founded Kaleidoscope Counseling, a group therapy practice in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she has spent nearly two decades helping people — particularly Black women — navigate the terrain of relationships, family systems, and self-worth. Her therapeutic approach is simple and radical: most people’s suffering comes not from what they feel but from what they don’t say.

In 2021, she published Set Boundaries, Find Peace: A Guide to Reclaiming Yourself. It became an instant New York Times bestseller and has since been translated into over 35 languages. The premise was straightforward — boundaries are the foundation of healthy relationships — but the execution was exceptional: practical, direct, culturally aware, and free of the guilt that usually comes with boundary-setting advice. Oprah called the work essential. Therapists began assigning it to clients. Her Instagram account, where she shares what she calls “Nedra Nuggets,” grew to over 2 million followers.

She followed with Drama Free: A Guide to Managing Unhealthy Family Relationships (2023) — a book that tackled the hardest terrain: family members you can’t simply walk away from. Her appearance on the Oprah Podcast discussing going “no contact” with family became one of the most-watched episodes in the show’s run. Named to the TIME 100 list of Most Influential People in Global Health, she has appeared on Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, The Breakfast Club, Red Table Talk, and over a dozen major podcasts. Her message stays the same: a boundary is not a wall. It’s a gate — and you’re the gatekeeper.

Signature Teachings

Key Ideas from Nedra Glover Tawwab

01

Boundaries are kindness, not punishment

Tawwab teaches that setting a boundary is an act of care — for yourself and for the relationship. Unspoken resentment destroys more relationships than clear 'no's ever will.

02

You can't fix a family system alone

Drama Free is about accepting that you can't change other people. You can only change how you engage — and sometimes that's enough.

03

Peace is a practice, not a destination

Her work is practical and daily: small decisions to protect your energy add up to a life that feels sustainable rather than exhausting.
