5G will change gaming FOREVER

About this video

Sponsored by Verizon, this video explains latency as the core internet problem and how Verizon 5G combined with AWS cloud aims to fix it. Latency is how long it takes to reach a website or service in a distant data center; Chuck compares the trip to a road trip to the Grand Canyon that Google Maps said would take 16 hours but took 25 hours with four kids and pit stops, just as internet traffic is delayed by routers, switches, firewalls, congestion, and detours. He says Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband using millimeter wave shortens the trip, virtualizes network equipment, and is 10 times faster than 4G LTE, but traffic still faces the wider internet. The fix is MEC, mobile edge computing, via AWS Wavelength — AWS servers placed inside Verizon’s network, available as of August 6, 2020 in places including Boston and the Bay Area — so apps sit at the edge, close to users. Examples are ShotTracker from DD Sports, described by founder Davion Ross as providing real-time basketball analytics with sub-second latency, and a trial where Dr. Shannon Shull in Raleigh, North Carolina uses 5G, AI, and the edge to draw bounding boxes around colon polyps in real time during colonoscopy, where waiting two to three seconds would miss them. Chuck closes by suggesting lower latency could advance driverless cars and VR gaming.

Key takeaways

• Latency — time lost to distance, routers, switches, firewalls, and congestion — is presented as the main reason fast internet still feels slow
• Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband shortens the network path, but leaving Verizon’s network still exposes traffic to internet delays
• AWS Wavelength puts AWS cloud servers inside Verizon’s network as mobile edge computing (MEC), bringing apps to the edge near users
• ShotTracker is used to show real-time basketball tracking that is visibly delayed on 4G plus distant cloud versus 5G edge
• A colonoscopy AI trial shows why real-time, low-latency processing matters: polyps must be flagged instantly or the moment passes
